MaxLinear Surpasses Gigabit Speed with Its Newest Single-Chip Solution for Coax Home Networks

Third-generation MoCA 2.0 system single-chip solution from MaxLinear pushes performance, low power and small size to unprecedented levels

LAS VEGAS, January 5, 2016 – (International Consumer Electronics Show) – MaxLinear Inc. (NYSE: MXL), a leading provider of radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for cable and satellite broadband communications, the connected home, and for data center, metro, and long-haul fiber networks, today announced the MxL3705, the world’s first fully integrated Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA®) 2.0 system solution that exceeds gigabit-per-second data rates.

MoCA has become essential to pay TV operators for guaranteed distribution of broadband data service throughout the home, moving past its roots as an enabler of multi-room DVR or video gateway / IP-STB networks. Service providers are leveraging in-home coax wiring to create wired data backbones connected to multiple Wi-Fi access distribution points to dramatically improve subscribers’ user experience of accessible data speeds everywhere inside the home.

As broadband operators invest in platforms capable of greater than 1Gbps broadband speeds entering the home, the need for a home networking solution that matches the same gigabit-plus data speed performance is essential.  The MxL3705 is the only MoCA device on the market that eliminates today’s in-home broadband distribution bottleneck of sub-gigabit-per-second data speeds.

As the pioneer of MoCA technology, MaxLinear’s MxL3705 is the culmination of eight generations of MoCA technology and the field-experience gained from 120 million chips in cumulative shipments. The MxL3705 constitutes the world’s highest-performance coax home networking solution with the greatest level of integration and lowest power in the market.

The MxL3705 can provide 1.2Gbps of aggregate MAC throughput between up to 16 nodes equipped with MaxLinear MxL37xx devices. The device is backward interoperable with MoCA 1.x and MoCA 2.0 bonded and single-channel nodes. The MxL3705 can automatically adjust to its higher performance mode whenever it is communicating to a node based on the MxL3705 or future products in the family. This maximizes throughput for the entire network even when the network is made up of products using MoCA chips from different vendors.

Packaged in an 8mm x 8mm QFN, the MxL3705 is a single-chip MoCA solution consisting of an integrated RF power amplifier (PA), Tx/Rx switch, low-noise amplifier (LNA), Full-Spectrum Capture™ (FSC™) analog-digital converter (ADC), MoCA PHY and MAC. Supported interfaces within the MxL3705/6 family include RGMII, 2.5G SGMII, and PCIe v2.1. For MoCA adapters, a host-less version of the chip is also available to provide the lowest possible bill-of-material cost.

“MaxLinear is committed to advancing MoCA technology and delivering leading-edge multi-gigabit home networking solutions to the market,” said Will Torgerson, MaxLinear Vice President & General Manager of Broadband Group and Global Sales. “The MxL3705 is uniquely positioned to support the needs of operators to reliably deliver data and IP video at the fastest rates available over a MoCA home network. Perfect for gateways, ONTs, set-top boxes, routers, and Wi-Fi extenders, the MxL3705 satisfies the performance requirements that service providers demand.”
