Key Takeaways:

  • MoCA Link easily connects 5G and LEO Satellite signals from the outside to the inside of the building
  • External antennas contribute to faster speeds
  • Includes reverse power feed - no new power to outside
  • Reuses coax wire
  • Speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps
  • Saves costs and time

MoCA Link™ 2.5, 5G and Satellite Broadband

How recently ratified MoCA Link™ 2.5 standard connects 5G and satellite broadband transceivers to in-home routers without compromising latency

MoCA Link™ 2.5 is the newest member ratified standard from Multimedia over Coax Alliance, MoCA®. In a home or MDU, MoCA Link 2.5 plus existing coaxial TV cabling acts as the network connectivity bridge between the outside transceiver to interior modem/router. Network speeds up to 2.5 gigabits per second (Gbps) with ultra-low latency of less than 1 millisecond results in minimal overall latency overhead on the end-to-end connection. Low latency means better overall network performance.

Why MoCA Link™

Internet access technologies including Fixed Wireless 5G and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite, and 10G Passive Optical Networks (PON) benefit from network termination at the edge of the house or MDU.

In particular, millimeter wave 5G Fixed Wireless and LEO satellite signals do not penetrate building materials easily so termination at the home’s edge requires outdoor line-of-sight transceiver(s) with a connection to the interior modem/router.

This edge to interior modem/router connectivity requirement is where devices using MoCA Link™ 2.5 can potentially save operators or MDU owners significant labor and disruption during installation. Less installation time means a reduction in Total Cost of Ownership for the service provider or MDU owner. And because MoCA Link™ 2.5 also offers reverse power feed it can solve the problem of how to get power to that outside unit, again potentially saving installation time and cost.

Applications include:

Fixed Access 5G wireless

MoCA Link using 5G
Connecting 5G receivers on the outside of the home to the Wi-Fi router inside the home.

LEO Satellites

MoCA Link using satellite
Connecting satellite receivers on the roof of the home to the Wi-Fi router inside the home.

Where MoCA Link™ fits in home network connectivity

Home:
MoCA Home™ offers superior home connectivity and multi-gigabit connectivity in single family homes.  As new devices such as desktop gaming consoles, and high end laptops move to multi-gigabit speeds, the question is how to ensure that these client devices get 2.5 Gbps of network speed regardless of distance from the home gateway?

A potential solution is to use network extenders or adapters with MoCA Home™ 2.5 technology and pre-existing coax. Developed to deliver 2.5 Gbps of whole-home network coverage, MoCA Home™ 2.5 can bring multi-gigabit network speeds to those new 2.5 Gbps client devices from the home gateway or router over existing coaxial cable.

MDUs
For apartments and other multi-dwelling units (MDUs) including town home complexes, office buildings, and hotels, MoCA Access™ 2.5 provides multi-gigabit networking to individual homes in the MDUs with at least a 30% reduced high-speed broadband Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over all fiber build outs.

Now internet service providers and building owners can terminate fiber services at the premise point of entry and use pre-existing coaxial cabling infrastructure with MoCA Access™ 2.5 to deliver that service with speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps to each apartment unit. MoCA Access™ 2.5 also supports the Broadband Forum’s TR-419 standard for fiber access extension over existing copper infrastructure providing the internet service provider essential manageability aspects to the solution.

Fixed wireless 5G and LEOs
Reuse of existing coax cabling plus the benefits of MoCA Link™ 2.5 are a cost-effective method for fixed wireless 5G and satellite operators to build out broadband network installations cost effectively with minimal in-home disruptions.

Unlocking a multi-gigabit future

MoCA standards are ready for multi-gigabit broadband delivery. With 2.5 Gbps of network bandwidth speed now, the three MoCA® standards designed for: MoCA Home™, MoCA Access™, and MoCA Link™ have a roadmap to support current and next generation multi-gigabit bandwidth connectivity and access technologies.
